How to apply mascara…Say goodbye to clumpy lashes!

Clumpy eye lashes filled with way too mascara is not a good look for anyone! This has to be one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to makeup. Mascara is meant to take your natural lashes and enhance them to look soft and lush, not tarantula like! To really get more out of a mascara you must try a mascara that will separate and define each lash rather than coat it like crazy. I recently tried the new Christian Dior mascara, Iconic, $27.00. I am in love! The rubber wand that so many cosmetic companies are naming as their own, is really amazing for natural looking lashes that will help to achieve a natural, more separated look. Chanel mascara in Inimitable, $28.00, is another one of my all time favorite mascaras. For a more affordable mascara with a similar technique, try L’oreal Clean Telescopic, $8.99, mascara which is really affordable and in my opinion works just as great as the other high end mascaras mentioned.

To add a little more volume to your newly lush lashes, try a volumizing mascara over your defining mascara for the ultimate set of lashes! I created a video below which shows this same technique. In the video I used L’oreal Voluminous mascara, $8.99, which is great for the woman who loves to plump up her lashes!
One last thing, a mascara when used 5-7 days a week, will only last about 4-6 weeks due to bacteria build up and the amount of oxygen that is released into the tube each time it is opened. This tip will help your mascara to look more natural and to not flake off onto your skin! Do not ever add water or any other ingredients to your mascara, this will also help bacteria to mulitiply.

Hey Danica,
Good tutorial. Do you find the Diorshow Iconic mascara is better than the other Diorshow mascara, the one that has the the black tube and big brush? Btw, love your headscarf, looks adorable on you…..N

Hi Nadia!
I love the new Dior Iconic compared to the Dior Show because I do like my mascara to look more natural than very thick. Dior Show is great, but at times it can be a little too thick for my lashes. Thank you!

love the blog!
i agree with danica, some mascaras are just too thickening! i really love afterglow’s mascara in “onyx” i also love them because their cosmetics are safe & natural while not sacrificing great wear & color.
i love that i am nuturing my skin & looking fabulous at the same time!
this is where you can find them http://afterglowcosmetics.com

I just want to say i love your blog, but i do have one question. How do you keep from getting your mascara on your eyelids and eyeshadow? My sister and i debate all the time on the best technique to use when applying mascara. I prefer to take my time and go slow on each stroke to ensure that all lashes have mascara on them, where she prefers to quickly swipe her mascara on. What would you suggest?

Thank you! You know every eye is different and well as every persons technique. I like to curl my mascara wand and don’t seem to have a problem. I would try applying less pressure at the root of the lash and see if that helps.

Hi Danica,
I am so impressed with your makeup skill. It’s amazing. I wish I could have a part of that. I just want to ask you that the Diorshow Iconic is a base mascara or a real mascara. I hope it’s not a stupid question. I’m new with makeup and I really need help from everyone. I’ve tried so many mascaras but I have not found a perfect one yet. I have a full, long and thick lashes, and I want to find some thing that helps separate and curl them. I’m so frustrated.
Thank you so much. Everything from you is really really helpful, and I do appreciate that a lot.

That is not a stupid question at all! Dior Iconic is great by itself or under a mascara. For the everyday women I would suggest using just one mascara. The Dior Iconic is nice because it is not clumpy and will seperate your lashes. I also really like L’oreal Clean Telescopic Mascara!

Dear Danica,
May I start by thanking you for all your help with makeup!
I have loved makeup since I was about 5, but until about a year ago I did not fully embrace my total love of it. Now I can’t get enough of learning new styles and techniques.
Initially I found your videos on YouTube and have now registered on your site too. What a wonderful medium it is to learn new styles, but I have found yours the most easy to follow and with the best results.
I do have a question for you though which I hope you can help with.
With false eyelashes how many times can you wear them, before you have to throw them away?
Obviously you put glue on them as well as a little mascara, so if you keep pilling this on to them they will not work well at all.
Thank you for inspiring me to be what I have always wanted, a makeup artist!
Kind regards
Natasha

Hi Natasha,
Thank you! You can wear false lashes up to 10 times depending on the lash and how you wear them. If you apply mascara to your falsies, then I would not reuse them.
Also, if you wet them I would toss them out!
To reuse them just peel off the old glue and you are good to go!
You can tell when they are done and need to be replaced:)
