My favorite Skincare.

What is one of the first things that people notice when they look at you? Your skin! Our skin is our bodies largest organ, and a reflection of our total health. It is so sensitive, yet protects us from so many harmful elements. I am huge into skin care and love the idea of preventative care, which is to stop the damage before it happens! Now, let’s face it, there are not a whole lot of conditions that we have control over when it comes to our skin, but there are so many that we do.
Look at your mother and father’s skin, most likely you inherited one of their skin types… like it or not! I used to be all about the makeup, until I realized that your makeup is only as good as your skin. I receive so many questions asking about how to cover up freckles, large pores, dark spots and other textures. The truth be told… You can not cover up a texture on the skin! If your skin (and eye area) is raised, bumpy, puffy, rough, flaky, etc., there is no makeup that will cover up texture. Makeup is made to cover the tone of the skin, not the texture. For example, using a concealer to cover puffiness around the eyes will not work, but that concealer will cover any darkness or discoloration.
There are many products out there on the market, and it is best to 1. Determine your skin type and then 2. Determine your special needs. Your skin type can be normal, dry, oily, combination, or maybe all of the above depending on you. Your special needs can be concerns like: freckles, dark spots (discoloration, pigmentation, age spots, etc.) or acne. If you are unsure of your skin type and your specific concerns that you should visit a Medical Aestitician or your Dermatologist.
Once you have determined what your skin needs, now it is time for a regime! You can choose cosmoceutical products or over the counter (department store) products. Cosmoceuticals are great for people with major concerns, and I have had great success in the past with them. Department store products can be great too! They can get just as pricey though. When purchasing a product from a department store, keep in mind that product does not reach below the epidermis, which is just the top layer of the skin. These products can only do so much, so they are great for maintaining your skin. Be careful what the sales people behind the counter tell you about their lastest and greatest! Not many creams are worth hundreds of dollars, especially if sold in a department store. To see results, visit your local professional to see what would work best for you! Also, treatments from a professional can be great, such as: chemical peels (will take off layers of dead skin and help to even out the skin tone, texture, etc. ), microdermabrasion and facials. This is really what has helped get my skin into shape!
Here are some great tips for keeping your skin in prestige condition:
- Protect your skin from the sun by using an SPF of 15 or higher, daily.
- Sunglasses! We wear them to just look cute and to avoid being aggravated by the glaring sun, but protect that delicate eye area. Show off those new Guccis!

- Wash your face in twice a day, in the morning and in the night. Even if you have had a rough night, get out bed and wash your face!
- Use an eye cream! Your eye area is so delicate and you want to preserve that area.
- If you are experiencing extreme sensitivities, blotchiness, breakouts amongst other conditions, visit your local homeopathic doctor or naturopath. These professionals can help you to pin point what is off balance in your body to be causing these reactions.
- Shop on the outskirts of the grocery store where all of the fresh food is located. Avoid the middle of the store, this is filled with processed foods that cause irritation and inflammation. You can always take a multi-vitamin, but the best source of nutrition is always in your food.
- Take supplements, such as fish oil (not just any will do, make sure that it is a reputable brand that does not contain mercury), probiotics (good bacteria to fight off infections), and a daily vitamin that contains zinc.
- Wash your face before heading into the shower to avoid the hot water that can dry and irritate your skin.
- Exfoliate your skin at least once a week with a gentle scrub.
- Drink water and herbal tea to stay hydrated.
Now, watch my skin care video! I talk about my favorite skin care for myself and what works for me. I am pregnant, so have had to give up all chemical peels and cosmoceuticals for the time being, so I am using Shiseido (amazing brand, one of the only I would use in a department store) to help maintain my skin.

Congratulations on your baby boy! I am pregnant too and I am having a boy as well. I am currently using mineral foundation, but can you recommend any liquid or cream foundations that are suitable for pregnant women? My face color changed a bit since I’ve been pregnant. Thanks

Thank you, and congrats on your baby boy as well! Having a boy will be so much fun! Are you not satisfied with your mineral makeup? Is it powder? If you like the idea of a mineral makeup, but want a liquid or cream texture than you can try a Neutrogena Mineral Sheers. I worked for them for a day at an even a couple of months ago doing makeup, and I tried this foundation on a lot of people and loved it. It looked so natural and gave a flawless finish. There are other high end brands that I have tried as well, such as MAC mineralize skinfinish liquid and Jane Iredale which I thought were both good. Just like any other liquid foundation, finish it with a powder and you should be good to go!

Hi Danica,
First off, you are so kind to share your tips with everyone. I find them extremely helpful, and I love checking your site. Also, congrats on your baby!
My dermatologist put me on a strict skincare plan, and has told me to use mineral makeup only. So far, the regimen has cleared my skin wonderfully. My question is, what is the best way to cover red marks using mineral powder concealer/ foundation? I use Bare Escentuals face makeup (and Cetaphil moisturizer beforehand), as do tons of women, and I would love to know how to make my skin color uniform using only powders.
Any tips would be appreciated!

You can continue to use just your mineral makeup powder for concealer, but try using a smaller brush and apply the powder in a tapping motion on the area where you need more coverage. Bare escentuals should sell a concealer brush, but you can also try MAC #249 or I did this for a while and it worked great! Japonesque (www.japonesque.com) makes a line of brushes specifically for mineral makeup, and they have a concealer brush which is synthetic and anti-bacterial!

Great, thank you! I’ll try the japonesque brushes . . .

hi Danica!
I love all of your videos. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for a good peel or treatment to help even out my skin tone. I don’t have problems with breakouts. I do have large pores but I have redness in some places on my cheeks. Do you have any suggestions?
P.S. - Can’t wait to see how motherhood will treat you!! My baby just turned one!

Hi Jamie,
I talk about glycolic acid peels a lot and love them! I have used them myself and they really whipped my skin into shape… good luck!

so please help me ! what should i do?

Hey Danica,
i have got little bumps on my face what can i do to get rid of them?
January 11th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Hi Brittany,
With out seeing you in person it is so hard to say what the little bumps are that you have on your face. Even if I did see your skin in person I would still recommend that you see an aestitician or dermatologist to best help you. I am always a fan of a good deep cleaning cleanser (neutrogena pink grapefruit cleanser) and exfoliating at least once a week at night time. This should help your skin to be a bit more smooth:)

Hi Danica,
Thank you so much for sharing, I’m hooked on your videos! I’d like to ask you about the putting of eyecream over your made-up eyes. Wouldn’t it smudge your concealer or not sink in properly?
January 15th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Hi Eileen,
I put my eye cream on with the rest of my skin care before my makeup, but I am a sucker for a sheen on my skin and especially a dewy look around my eyes. Sometimes if I am not wearing a heavy eye makeup look I will place a very small amount of eye cream just to add a glow:) Thanks for watching!

Hi, sweetie. First of all, I feel really glad I found your tutorials, your the best I’ve ever seen.
So far, I came up with a question: Lately, my mom told me my face skin was going dead. I mean my pores are awfully visible and I don’t know how to fix it. I started using Elizabeth Arden’s products (Had one for everything) but they only worked the first months and then my face turned worst yet. Is there anything you can recomend for it? :s
kisses!

Hi Anna,
The best advice that I can give you is to visit your skin care professional. They can recommend treatments and professional grade products that can really help your skin more so than over the counter products can.
I believe in exfoliating 3 times a week at night which helps to polish the skin.
Talk to a pro and good luck!

Great blog. I love anything skin care related and find this blog very informative

Hi Danica,
First of all, let me just say thank you for all of your help. Your videos are amazing. I’m 28 and I’ve never worn makeup, but watching you has made it easy for me to follow. This tutorial on skincare however, was and still is the best I have ever seen.
Now, my question is this, you recommend exfoliating at least 3 times a week, is it ok to use the exfoliation along with my Shiseido products? Like the Extra Gentle Cleansing Foam? Also, the eye cream you speak of, Shiseido Benefiance Eye Cream, is it the Anti-Aging eye cream? Sorry for the long writing…
Thanks again for making my life easier
take care!
