The perfect eye kajal… finally!
November 22nd, 2008 · by Danica Jardien · Filed Under: products
My long awaited pefect eye kajal is here! So I have been complaining for months about my Hashmi Eye Kajal (khol) as you all know, which was found to contain lead. After finding out about my favorite eye khol containing lead, I have been left with a smudging mess for months now! Recently I have found Stila Eye Kajal $18.00, at your local Ulta or Sephora or major department store. I tested the product on my hand while shopping in Ulta, and fell in love instantly. Where has this eye pencil been all of my life? I guess I have been trying all of the wrong khols this entire time! This pencil is so rich and smooth, that it will glide along any set of eyes effortlessly! I use it mainly in my water cil (inside the eye) and have had the hardest time finding a pencil that was actually smooth, the blackest black and resembled a traditional eye khol from Pakistan or the Middle East. So for any of you ladies who need a great eye kajal for your water cil that will stay and keep a strong color, try this amazing Stila eye pencil.

The formula (eye kajal) is available is several different shades: Amethyst, Emerald, Onyx, Pearl, Sapphire, Smokey Quartz, Tigers Eye and Topaz. Below are a couple of well known women who are known for loving their eye khol!

Wow Danica, Thanks!! OMG, my kohl had been smudging and I have been switching from brand to brand, hoping to find on that does not smudge! And I have just subscribed last week, hoping to end midterms and ask you the question that you have just answered! Wohoo~ *a round of applause for Danica*

I have been wondering about this kohl pencil and am so glad to have found a review of it. It sounded great, but I didn’t want to buy it and end up with that smudgey mess we all know so well. THANKS for this review - I am going to head out and buy the Stila kohl as soon as I can

I am lovin’ it!

Great, I am so glad that you found this info helpful. One suggestion is to apply a powder (eye shadow of your choice) of the eye khol if you are wearing it on the upper or lower eye lid just to “set it” and help it’s durability. If you are still experiencing any smudging I know of a couple waterproof eyeliners that really DO NOT come off!

Thank you so much for all the helpful tips. I am going to Sephora today!

YAY! Finally!! Thank you!!
November 23rd, 2008 at 1:27 pm
I know, it is great:) I want everyone to keep in mind that this eye kajal is creamy and not waterproof, so like I said the previous response, “set it” with an eye shadow. Also, even if you are not wearing any eyeshadow and just using an eye kajal, still wear your eye shadow base. An eyeshadow base will keep everything in place for the day and prevent this eye kajal from transferring. Thanks for the comment!

Your welcome, thank you for the comment and subscription! I want to go buy more colors, I just have the onyx for now, but Tigers Eye looks amazing as well as Amethyst.

Great one.. At first I hated the Stila Kajal Pencil but setting it with powder makes all the difference. I need to check this out in other colors though.
November 24th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Was it too creamy for you? Try using an eye shadow base before hand as well and you will see quite the difference.
November 24th, 2008 at 9:53 am
have you tried guerlain kohl powder?
November 24th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Do you know any other eyeliners that do not come off?
November 24th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Well this eyeliner is not the most durable on the market, that’s for sure! I am loving it to stay inside my water cil:) MAC liquidlast liquid liner stays and really really well and you need a makeup remover to get it off! Urban Decay’s 24/7 eye liner pencil is pretty good as far as staying power goes as well!
November 24th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
Yeah I do like the Guerlain eye khol, but there are days that I am just not a fan of the texture and wanted a darker color. The three colors available are just not dark enough for me. The powder texture is good when I am using it on an eyelid, but not so much my water cil. All in all, it is a good product:)
November 24th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
so is this khol turn out really, really dark?
November 24th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Yeah, it is the darkest that I have tried:) Try it before you buy it!

You are too sweet for giving me that link! This looks like an eye khol that I would love as well. The fact that it is water proof is so appealing! As soon as it is in stock, I am ordering one and I will let you know how it is. Thank you so much!

Not a problem. Glad I could help.
Yes please do let us know how it is because this is something new to me and I would love to try it myself if it’s worth it.

hey Danica…u rocked!!!! well i just bought MAC’s smolder….it doesnt stay well in the eye cil…plssssssssss tell me a tip…which eye shade color shd i use it to make it stay for long n avaoid smudgin…love u!
November 28th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Hey Nadya! I wanted to love Smolder and tried for years to make it work, but the sad truth is that it doesn’t stay very well in the water cil and does tend to smudge. There is really nothing you can do to make it stay within the water cil, but to help it be more durable on the eye area, you can use an eye shadow base first, apply smolder, then set it with an eye shadow. I do like the Stila kajal for the water cil because it is so rich and creamy, but I am still wanting something to stay even better. I think in the water cil you just have to end up touching up a couple of times a day unfortunately. Thanks for the comment and good luck with your Smolder!

Hi Danica,
I went to the Sephora to get this Stila Onyx Kajal eyeliner, and they were sold out, but there is another Stila Onyx Eyeliner, it has a smudger and an eyeshadow on the other end of the pencil. Do you recommened this one as well? I swatched the kajal one and the double sided liners, and the one that is double sided is actually darker then the kajal one! It could just be me, I don’t know but I was hoping you could give me some answers!
Btw - the MA there said the kajal one will smudge more then the other onyx one since it was softer.
Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!

Hi Roshni,
Thanks for the comment! Hmmm… Interesting! Well, try it and tell me what you think! I have a hard time trying everything out there, so I am looking for people to give me feedback on products. I am still in love with my eye kajal. I think any pencil put into the water cil of the eye is not going to last all day no matter what it is, so I have made peace with the fact that I am going to touch it up a couple of times throughout the day. Try it out and tell me what you think:)

Dear Danica,
I have been searching for the darkest eye kajal and I have been hearing really good reviews about the stilla eyeliner. I used this kajol from pakistan and it came out incredibly dark. Is there any other eyeliners or kajal’s I should try?
And also, I have been hearing great reviews about the blackout diorshow mascarra is it really the best mascarra?
Thank you so much
February 12th, 2009 at 9:26 am
Hi Anusha,
Yeah stick with the Stila Eye Kajal, it is very rich, creamy and dark! I do like the Dior Show Blackout, it is very volumizing. Many other lines are coming out with their version on the blackest black mascara now too. Godd luck!

All my life I am having hard time to find a right eye pencil/liner for my eyes as my eyes are real watery. I have tried so-called water proof khols from estee lauder, mac to drug store products but they do not stay intact even for 2 hours and get smeared around my eye corners. I have to check my compact mirror every hour to keep it clean around lower eye lids.
So in short, does it really work? Also, what kind of eye shadow base do you recommend?
March 4th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Hi Syma,
The watercil is so difficult to keep product on and especially if your eyes are more watery than most. This eye kajal is very creamy and pigmented so it stays pretty well, but again in that area it is difficult to keep a product on all day. It is one of those things that does have to be touched up quite a bit!
March 4th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Hi Miriam,
I know! I am still grieving:( It was my favorite! Try Stila’s eye kajal, you will like it!

So, this is kinda off topic, but in the pics above of Megan Fox, do you know what lipstick she is wearing? I LOVE the color but can’t seem to find anything on my own that I’m satisfied with! P.S. You do the best make up I’ve seen on Youtube
April 11th, 2009 at 9:44 am
It is hard to say, but it looks like MAC Whirl Lip Pencil with Hug Me or Modesty Lipstick?
April 27th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
I have the stila..you are right..it’s highly pigmented and I love it for the waterline. Unfor, I can’t let go of my hashmi kajal..it’s seriously the best product ever and I get it for like $2 from my local store. One thing I’v tried to keep the stila pencil from smudging is put a eyeshadow on top of it and it seemed to have worked..it didnt’ budge for hours after doing that. Still, I find the hashmi so easy to use..just pick it up line it and go
My mom’s used it for years and alhumdulillah shes had no problems..so i am keeping my fingers crossed. meh.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Salaam Sakina,
I know it was such a great eye khol:) I am telling you, I still cannot throw out my last Hashmi!
